Before any masterpiece can be crafted, it must first be conceived. In the world of watchmaking, the journey from an idea to a tangible timepiece begins with design. In my workshop in Nashville, Tennessee, this creative process is a blend of traditional hand sketches and modern technology, where imagination meets precision.
The Design Process: From Sketch to Reality
Every new watch or component starts with a simple hand sketch. This initial phase allows me to explore ideas freely, but soon, these sketches are translated into digital form using advanced software. This software, known as CAD (Computer-Aided Design), enables me to create detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawings. These drawings are crucial—they not only visualize the design but also provide the precise dimensions and tolerances needed for manufacturing.
With CAD, I can test various aspects of the design, from material choices to stress analysis, all before any material is cut. This level of detail ensures that when it’s time to manufacture, every component will fit perfectly and perform as intended.
Bringing Designs to Life: The Role of CAM
Once the design is finalized in CAD, it’s time to move on to CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing). CAM software takes the 3D designs and translates them into a set of instructions for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. These instructions dictate how the machine should move, what tools to use, and even whether to apply coolant during the cutting process.
This step is like programming a complex video game, where precision is key. The CAM software helps me avoid potential pitfalls that could damage the machine or ruin the part. Since the stakes are high—these machines are powerful and costly to repair—it’s essential that everything is perfectly set up before cutting begins.
The Finishing Touches: Polishing and Decoration
As a watchmaker, I believe in going the extra mile to add those finishing touches that make each watch unique. This involves a variety of techniques, from Geneva stripes and polished surfaces to brushed finishes and electroplating. My workshop is equipped with specialized machines for each of these tasks, allowing me to achieve the highest level of detail and craftsmanship.
One of the most advanced tools I use is a laser engraver. Unlike traditional engraving tools, a laser can create sharp internal corners and intricate details without leaving any radius on the edges. This precision allows for flawless execution of designs that would be impossible with manual methods.
A Small Team, A Personal Touch
What sets my workshop apart is the personal involvement I have in every step of the watchmaking process. From design and machining to final assembly and shipping, I’m there every step of the way. This hands-on approach ensures that each watch is crafted to the highest standards and that I’m the last person to touch it before it’s shipped to its new owner.
Unlike larger workshops where different stages of production might be spread across various locations, everything here is close at hand. My machining station is just a few feet away from where I add the final touches, like pairing the watch with the perfect strap and signing the certificate of authenticity. This setup not only streamlines the process but also allows me to maintain a personal connection with each timepiece.

What fascinates me about watchmaking is how each watchmaker’s workshop is a reflection of their personality.
